On December 16, the 2023 Annual Conference of Hebei Translation Society, sponsored by Hebei Translation Society and hosted by the School of Foreign Languages of Shijiazhuang University, was held in the lecture hall of Leda International Art College. Chen Liang, Secretary of the Party Committee of the University, Ji Lihuai, Secretary of the Discipline Inspection Committee, Wang Tingshan, first level Inspector of Hebei Provincial Department of Education, President of Hebei Higher Education Association, Cao Baogang, former Vice Chairman of Hebei Social Science Association, Li Zhengshuan, President of Hebei Translation Society, Sun Jianzhong, Chief Consultant of Hebei Translation Society, attended the conference. More than 150 members from colleges and universities in Hebei Province, publishing units, technology companies and translation industry representatives attended the conference.

 

At the opening ceremony, Chen Liang delivered a welcome speech to express the congratulations on the holding of the 2023 Annual Conference of Hebei Translation Society. He showed sincere welcome to the arrival of the participants, and heartfelt thanks to the friends who have cared and supported the development of Shijiazhuang University over the years. Chen Liang pointed out that Shijiazhuang University has always adhered to the localization, application-oriented and international school-running orientation. We adhere to the socialist school-running direction, implement the fundamental task of cultivating morality and cultivating people, and strengthen the core position of talent training center and undergraduate education and teaching. Seizing the rare historic opportunity of the coordinated development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and the construction of a strong provincial capital, we are on the way of unique development. Implementing the “1396” development strategy, we take the road of characteristic development of application-oriented university construction. This annual conference was held in our university, which provided us with a rare opportunity to learn and exchange with experts and scholars in the translation field closely. The university will take this annual conference as an opportunity to further strengthen the communication and cooperation with Hebei Translation Society and related units in line with the principle of “openness, integration, mutual learning and sharing”. By strengthening foreign language disciplines, we will gather first-class teachers to participate in international exchanges and language services in the provincial capital. We will shoulder our responsibility to promote the integrated development of production, university, research and application, promote the training of translation talents and the construction of translation teams, carry out foreign exchanges and social services, and comprehensively assist and support Hebei Translation Society to achieve greater success.

The conference aims to implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China. Experts and scholars from Fudan University, Nankai University, Shanghai International Studies University, Xizang Minzu University, Hebei University, Hebei Normal University, North China Electric Power University and other universities in and outside the province focused on the theme of “Enhancing Translation China and International Communication Ability under the Background of International Talent Cultivation". They made keynote speeches on topics such as the construction of language service and translation majors, a review of China's translation practice in the past 10 years under the Belt and Road Initiative, Hebei Province's international cultural communication practice and research on the 74th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, international communication ability, and the construction of foreign discourse system. They exchanged translation experience and discussed translation practice. The forum had a strong academic atmosphere, with brilliant and diverse presentations, and a warm and harmonious atmosphere at the venue.

Professor He Yutao, Vice Dean of the School of Foreign Languages at our university, served as the moderator of the forum and delivered a wonderful report on the Translation Practice and Exploration of the Chinese-English Dictionary of Public Signs in Shijiazhuang. The report analyzed the types of errors currently found in the translation of public signs in the provincial capital, discussed the translation issues of Chinese-English public signs, and aimed to provide standardized materials and standards for the translation of public signs in Shijiazhuang. It has been highly recognized and unanimously praised by the experts and scholars present at the forum.

 

The conference also announced the winners of the 5th Translation Achievement Award of Hebei Translation Society and awarded certificates to the winners.

 

The hosting of the 2023 Annual Conference of Hebei Translation Society is one of the series of activities to celebrate the 20th anniversary of our school. The School of Foreign Languages attaches great importance to it and has made careful preparations for the conference, selecting faculty and student volunteers to provide warm and thoughtful services for the conference, ensuring its smooth progress, and fully demonstrating the good spirit of the faculty and students. Taking this opportunity to host the annual conference, the school will continue to implement the '1396' development strategy, deepen the construction of translation and international communication capabilities, strengthen cultural exchanges and cooperation with foreign countries in Hebei Province, tell China's stories and spread China's voice, promote the training of international talents in the new era, and make new and greater contributions.
