Workers’ Daily Reports on Characteristic Development of “Faculty Homes” at Our University
Release time:2025-06-17 08:51:16stamp
By integrating disciplinary strengths and practical needs, our university has created the “One Home, One Characteristic” initiative to energize and unite branch labor unions. On June 16,Workers’ Dailyfeatured our “Faculty Homes” program in an article entitled One Home, One Brand: Creating Warm Havens for Faculty and Staff. The full report is as follows:
As an institution with 1,381 faculty and staff members, Shijiazhuang University Labor Union has established 21 branch unions across schools, building distinctive “Faculty Homes” under the framework of “five dimensions”: democratic engagement, warmth, cultural enrichment, collective endeavor, and openness. Through funding safeguards, institutional innovation, professional empowerment, and emotional connections, these 21 “Faculty Homes” have become warm havens for all staff.
Cheng Haixia, a retired music professor, treasures a crystal plaque engraved with anacrostic poem—a gift from the Music School branch union at her retirement ceremony. The union also organized young faculty to perform the danceHeritagein her honor. “I was moved to tears that day,” Cheng recalled.
At the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering’s “Faculty Home,” awards like the “North China Regional First Prize” and “National Final Second Prize” prominently adorn the wall. Focused on “Young Faculty Development,” this home leverages the Hebei Province “Craftsman + Engineer” Ideological-Political Demonstration Center to establish a “competition-driven teaching” training system.
In 2024, young faculty member Kan Yunfei won the National Second Prize in the National Teaching Competition for Young Faculty in Electronics. During her preparation, the “Faculty Home” arranged expert guidance and peer support. “The pressure was immense, but my ‘Family Support’ took turns polishing lessons with me—that boosted my confidence,” Kan said.
Over three years, the university has cultivated multiple provincial teaching awardees through this platform, fostering a “collaborative mentoring” culture. It has become a benchmark case for the “Young Talent Cultivation Project” under the university’s “1396” Development Strategy.
To ensure effective implementation, each branch union is chaired by a mid-level administrator, adopting an “administrative support + union operation” model.
The university labor union also implements a scientific funding mechanism, allocating annual activity budgets to branches with a “use-it-or-lose-it” policy to maximize engagement.
Ling Yu, chair of the Music School branch, built an arts-focused “Faculty Home.” In 2024, they launched “Retirement Ceremony + Artistic Tribute” events—gifting custom art pieces and performances to retirees while inspiring younger faculty through educational legacy.
The Teacher Education School’s “Faculty Home” centers on mental health, operating a “dual-cycle” system (on-campus service + community outreach) via the Shijiazhuang Model Employee Counseling Center. In 2024, they partnered with education authorities to develop a mental health monitoring system for K-12 students.
The Science School’s home highlights scientific innovation through the “Yanzhao Master Innovators’ Alliance” creating an integrated “theory-research-practice” chain. Young faculty member Feng Xiao noted, “Research felt solitary before joining. Now, monthly seminars turn insights into collective breakthroughs—that’s the power of ‘home’!”
The “One Home, One Characteristic” approach ensures each unit’s unique strengths enhance vitality and cohesion.
From mentoring young competitors to honoring retirees with art; from counseling rooms to research salons—warm stories from these homes embody the union’s familial spirit. “When we build ‘homes’ in faculty hearts, education gains its firmest foundation,” stated a university representative.
In recent years, our university labor union has aligned with national priorities, placing faculty at the core of its work. Supporting the “1396” Development Strategy through the “five-dimension” framework, it strengthens ideological guidance, advances democratic governance, safeguards rights, promotes well-being, enriches cultural life, and unites faculty in following the Party’s leadership. The union was honored as a “Model Workers’ Home” by the China National Committee of Education, Science, Culture, Health and Sports in 2023, and received the “National Model Workers’ Home” title from the All-China Federation of Trade Unions in September 2024.
