SJZU’s Teacher Achieves Outstanding Results in the 8th National GIS Teaching Competition for Young University Faculty

Recently, the 8th National GIS Teaching Competition for Young University Faculty concluded successfully at Shandong University of Science and Technology. The competition attracted 88 young teachers from over 80 universities across China. Zhang Miaomiao, a faculty member from School of Geographical Sciences and Environment, centered her teaching on the principle of “fostering virtue through education,” closely integrated cutting-edge advancements in geographic information science, and skillfully incorporated AI technologies into her lecture. With her innovative instructional design and outstanding performance, she secured the first prize.
The National GIS Teaching Competition for Young University Faculty, guided by the China Association for Geographic Information Society, is held biennially and has been included in the list of 53 teaching competitions recognized by the National Higher Education Teacher Development Index. The competition adopts a format of preliminary rounds and finals. The preliminary stage divides participants into five groups, with each contestant delivering a 15-minute live teaching demonstration and a 5-minute presentation on instructional design innovation. The top five from each group advance to the finals. The event aims to motivate young faculty to engage actively in GIS education, encourage the innovation of teaching philosophies, enhance their teaching skills and professional competence, and ultimately improve classroom effectiveness and the quality of talent cultivation.
The School of Geographical Sciences and Environment places high importance on the growth of young faculty, actively organizing their participation in teaching competitions, ideological-political teaching contests, and teaching innovation events. For this competition, it meticulously coordinated preparations, facilitating repeated refinements and practice sessions to polish the contestants’ materials. The participating teacher remained composed and demonstrated remarkable dedication during the competition, fully showcasing the exceptional teaching capabilities of our university’s young faculty.
